For the Madrid European residency of her record-shattering Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour, Shakira stepped out before tens of thousands of cheering fans in an extraordinary custom ensemble designed by Delhi-based couturier Gaurav Gupta. Styled by Hollywood stylist Nicolas Bru, the bespoke creation marked a triumph for Indian couture on the global performance stage.
The ‘Lunar Wolf Breastplate’: Sculpted Armor
At the physical and symbolic core of the look is the ‘Lunar Wolf Breastplate,’ an extraordinary piece of wearable sculpture forged entirely in molded brass:
- The She-Wolf Motif: The breastplate is intricately sculpted around Shakira’s torso, bearing the embossed visage of a she-wolf (Loba)—an animal that has served as Shakira’s artistic avatar, totem of female resilience, and musical signature for nearly two decades.
- Jewel-Like Rigidity: Rather than conventional concert sequins or flat gold lame, Gupta treated the brass as high jewelry, contouring it to mirror her movements. Under dynamic blue and violet arena spotlights, the polished brass flashed with blinding intensity, delivering the presence of mythic armor.
The Handwoven Banarasi Silk Skirt: Fluid Architecture
Contrasting sharply with the rigid, protective brass bodice is an expansive, architectural skirt rooted in ancient Indian textile traditions:
- Heritage Banaras Weave: The skirt was crafted using rich silk brocade handwoven on traditional pit-looms in Banaras (Varanasi), India. While Banarasi weaves are traditionally celebrated in bridal sarees, Gupta repurposed the heavy textile into an avant-garde sculptural volume.
- Wave-Like Kinematics: The gold brocade hugs the hips snugly before billowing outwards into sweeping, architectural concentric folds that pool across the stage floor. Even when standing still, the deep structural folds mimic turbulent waves; as Shakira moved and danced, the fabric caught the lights in rich amber, bronze, and pale golden highlights.
- The Dramatic Train: The dramatic train extended several feet behind her, framing her silhouette with regal theatricality.
500 Hours of Artisanal Devotion
The ensemble required more than 500 hours of meticulous craftsmanship executed by a dedicated team of 10 Indian artisans, who painstakingly worked between the metal foundry in Noida and the handloom clusters of Varanasi. Gupta’s masterful balance of masculine metallic strength with feminine silk fluidity gave Shakira a look that felt completely attuned to the overarching theme of her tour: healing, fierce independence, and reclaimed power.
